Trade Secret 5 -10 04499600-5598P++ SECTION 3: HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION 3.1 EMERGENCY OVERVIEW Specific Physical Form: Waxy Solid Odor, Color, Grade: light amber, solid adhesive in rods, odorless. (Molten state: slight resinous odor.) General Physical Form: Solid Immediate health, physical, and environmental hazards: May cause thermal burns. NOTE: Laboratory studies were Page 1 of 7 3M MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET Jet-melt ôAdhesive 3747-AE / 3747-PG / 3747-TC / 3747-Q 04/25/2002 conducted to characterize volatiles released during Jet-melt use. Air samples were collected from the head space of the adhesive and from the simulated breathing zone of a Polygun user during application. Although acetic acid and acrolein were measured in the product's head space, the chemicals were not detected in the breathing zone air samples (i.e., chemical concentrations were below the lower limits of analytical detection). These results indicate a very low inhalation hazard when normal industrial hygiene practices are used. However, customer correspondence indicate that eye and upper respiratory system irritation may occur. For this reason, the product should be used in a well ventilated area. 3.2 POTENTIAL HEALTH EFFECTS Eye Contact: Vapors from heated material may cause eye irritation. Signs/symptoms may include redness, swelling, pain, tearing, and blurred or hazy vision. Thermal Burns: Signs/symptoms may include severe pain, redness and swelling, and tissue destruction. Skin Contact: Thermal Burns: Signs/symptoms may include intense pain, redness and swelling, and tissue destruction. Inhalation: During heating: Upper Respiratory Tract Irritation: Signs/symptoms may include cough, sneezing, nasal discharge, headache, hoarseness, and nose and throat pain. Ingestion: Physical Blockage: Signs/symptoms may include cramping, abdominal pain, and constipation. 3.3 POTENTIAL ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS A conservative, screening level assessment of this product indicates that its use and proper disposal are expected to present a low environmental risk. SECTION 4: FIRST AID MEASURES 4.1 FIRST AID PROCEDURES Page 2 of 7 3M MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET Jet-melt ôAdhesive 3747-AE / 3747-PG / 3747-TC / 3747-Q 04/25/2002 The following first aid recommendations are based on an assumption that appropriate personal and industrial hygiene practices are followed. Eye Contact: Immediately flush eyes with large amounts of water for at least 15 minutes. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REMOVE MATERIAL. Get immediate medical attention. Skin Contact: Immediately flush skin with large amounts of cold water for at least 15 minutes. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REMOVE MATERIAL. Cover affected area with a clean dressing. Get immediate medical attention. Wash contaminated clothing and clean shoes before reuse. Inhalation: Remove person to fresh air. If signs/symptoms develop, get medical attention. If Swallowed: Do not induce vomiting unless instructed to do so by medical personnel. Give victim two glasses of water. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Get medical attention.
